Restoring hope on Good Friday

Good Friday was a cold and somewhat damp day. But during our regular attendance at Crossmaglen market that day we endeavoured to bring a bit more warmth and brightness.

With some hot cross buns and big flasks of hot tea, we toured the market stalls encouraging anyone who wanted a warm-up to have some tea and buns and give a donation in exchange.

The buns had been donated to us by one of Crossmaglen’s excellent bakeries – McNamees – and were some of the best we’d ever tasted. That meant that all the money we collected that day – about £110 in all – we were able to pass on to the Families of the Disappeared to support them in their search for their loved ones’ remains.

Kitty Armstrong, wife of Charlie who disappeared in August 1981, came to the Mega Mobile with her daughter Anna McShane to enjoy some hot cross buns with us. John Armstrong, Charlie’s brother, also visited us at the Mega Mobile. They were also able to see our stand which we have at each market as a reminder that Charlie and Gerry Evans, another Crossmaglen man who disappeared in March 1979, still have not been located.

Our work to support the Families of the Disappeared is part of Crossfire Trust’s Restoring Hope programme, a project supported by PEACE III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the Community Relations Council/Pobal Consortium.
